Happy 87th Birthday Grandpa!

Happy 87th Birthday Grandpa, originally uploaded by jjutt.

Just the 1st pass spent around 90mins. Let's see how far I go when I spend another 2hrs on him. I really enjoyed studying his features and proportions. Now its time for the detail of wrinkles and moles. Round Two Fight!

Worm Concept to Model

I've recently joined a group of students & alumni who are trying to help create the vision of our director/teacher Thierry DiDonna for a experimental class called Group Project at Ex'pression College for the Digital Arts.

To see the animatic click this:

And here is one of my concepts that have recently been modeled.
The story is really unique and symbolic as you will see w/this character. So i hope everything else moves smoothly. Enjoy

I always want to try figure drawing w/new mediums like my idol James Jean. He makes his figures looks saw flawless w/color and style. So here i am giving it a shot. Graph paper with red and purple Primsa colour pencils.

I added two layers of texture in PS. Cardboard and Decorative Paper.
Both found on www.cgtextures.com

My BART Journal

Here are some of the people I've seen over the year's riding the BART. They come in all shapes and sizes, colors and creeds. What a wonderful melting pot I live in, you never know what kind of character you'll sit across from. Hopefully you just have a sketchbook in hand to capture their personality.
Enjoy!

Alien Body WIP v4

Alien Body WIP v4, originally uploaded by jjutt.

Ok so i revisted the body, and i wasn't too happy with how it came out even though i had my reference. So after showing it to a few friends I started to see what they where talking about. Sometimes you have a feeling about something but you just can put a finger on it. That's why it's so important to get feedback to put you back on track. I took their notes and applied it in PS. I would love to read more critiques and comments if you have them.
Thanks

No Exit

**I changed the name of my BLOG so please redirect yourself to www.jjutt.blogspot.com

This character is based off a lovely painting from Keun Chul called No Exit. With all the texture and history of his strokes that he puts into his characters (especially his monsters) I knew it would be fun to try to translate into Zbrush

see the original painting here: http://keun-chul.deviantart.com/art/No-exit-60510112

After finishing Dog The Bounty Hunter I realized that I never light my characters from below...so I thought this face that I sketched out earlier in the day at my friends house would be perfect. I am pleased w/the result. His facial features where all inspired by this awesomly wrinkly man i saw on the BART this afternoon. It was very painful for me to look at him knowing i had no sketchpad at hand so i studied his features without trying to look too obvious knowing that i would be able to get my revenge later.

SpeedPainting_dog the bounty hunter 45min

What started off w/some drum and bass music turned into a 45 speed painting test. I had a lot of fun w/this one. No rules just draw, shade, hightlight and erase. I started w/the eyes and nose and just branched out from there. I really wish i recorded it, so you could see my workflow. I didnt want to use the eraser at all, just black & white for adding and subtracting the form. It's really starting to feel like sculpting which i am really excited for!

As I look back at this character i try to decide where all the influences came from and i think i figured it out. I was looking at a book earlier in the day about an artist named Akira Toriyama (DragonBall etc.) and i love how human he made his animals look. So that i belive is why i added the dog ears and fat lips/teeth. The cape could have come from the same reference but i believe that is just that fact that i like super heros and haven't drawn fabric in a while. Earings are just cool to add on to any character and the same goes for the patch too. Wrinkles are a lot of fun and add so much history to a character. Then if you notice i tried to add scars coming from the patch which where drawn w/the same approach for all the wrinkles just a bit sharper and more inbetween.
Have a MEGA day.

oh yeah, after all said and done the name was the last thing that came to me.

I would say that sculpting in mudbox09 is like drawing w/my left hand (mind you I am right handed). But by God it sure looks beautiful w/ real-time ambient occlusion, depth of field, and specularity from the lights.
So in conclusion you can make this in less than an hour.
Good day to you all,

Let's Go!

this all started on the drive to LA. When my share of the driving was over i decided to see how my laptop would handle Zbrush. It wasn't that bad, i mean slow, sure but i think i got something cool out of it. So that was enough to make realize that this 4yr old laptop still can produce which is great, especially when your mobile.I woke up this morning at 5am, turned on the radio to NPR. Then decided to revisit this guy to figure out how i could render his wireframe in Zbrush if at all. I couldn't figure it out at first, so i just went and rendered out different skin looking matcaps and fancied it up in Photoshop. Finally i messed around w/so many and figure out this method
1.)Turn on the Polyframe view
2.)Preferences>Draw set the following:
  • PFrame 100
  • Pf Color White
  • PFill 0
3.) Set the canvas to pure black and turn on Render>Flat

Lastly i dolled up the render in Photoshop again. I couldn't help myself

In Memory

i finally revisited a bust i started a few months ago in memory of my Grandfather Juan Rivas. I spent 4hrs fixing proportions and add details of wrinkles. He was 89yrs old and the sweetest man i ever knew, he passed away May 3rd of this year. i miss him. i should of done it while he was alive but i guess i was to busy w/school at the time. I kind of dont want to show my family members until he is textured, has hair, and his suit of course. He gave me the best family any man could ask for, all his children went to college and raised great families of their own, i love them all so dearly...i just have to fly over to Chile to see them..or i can just use SKYPE! man that program is awesome its the next best thing, i feel like im talking through a window when we use it. And of course it's a zillion times cheaper. so thats all for now i hope you all have a nice thursday.

took them in PS so they could face each other nicely, then added some blood just because it looked like they could use it and i used a red pen anyways.

* another interesting thing is that my brother has duel monitors so thats why they all turned out 3/4 views rather than the typical face looking into a webcam.
